York St John University safest in the region

Published: 22 July 2013

York St John University has been named the safest university in the region according to data published by the Complete University Guide.

Based on official police figures for violent crime, burglary and robbery, York St John University has been shown to have the lowest incidents of student-relevant crimes within three miles of its campus.

Commenting on the announcement, Chris Bateman, CEO of York St John Students’ Union said:

“York St John Students’ Union has been working for a number years with Higher York to develop a joint strategy with the other higher and further education institutions in York. This partnership strategy and particularly the safety and security theme within it, has been a major contributing factor to this fantastic result for the safety of students in York.”

He added:

“As a Students’ Union we have also run some specific campaigns to ensure the safety of our students, in particular the ‘BOB Burglar Balloon’ initiative which was aimed at increasing students’ awareness of security against burglary, and also the ‘Pay Safe Stay Safe’ taxi scheme which ensure students can always get a taxi home even if they have run out of money. Plus, we aim to give students some comprehensive advice on personal safety through our website.”

The Complete University Guide published data taken from official police statistics and gives the clearest picture possible of the crime rates for almost 120 universities in England and Wales.
